Clodwatch for Wednesday, March 4th 2009

For one brief, shining moment it looked like Michael Steele was capable of saying the right thing just a few days ago, when he acknowledged that Rush Limbaugh can be "ugly" and "incindiery." The mind boggles: the head of the NRC making reasonable statements? A guy who revels in being ugly and incindiery being labeled as such? It looked like the GOP might have been... learning from its mistakes! Perhaps there is a future for the Republican Party beyond crashing and burning with Palin and the Plumber at the wheel.

Alas:
"My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous
respect for Rush Limbaugh,” Steele said in a telephone
interview. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. …
There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice
or his leadership.”

Hahaha, right, sort of reminds me of just a few months ago when Congressman Phil Gingrey tried to make a similar statement... and then hurried back to kiss the master's feet. Maybe the third time will be the charm?  At least some of their politicians realize on some level that listening to Rush (undeniably popular with many on the right, but overall less popular than Jeremiah Wright or Bill Ayers) is a recipe for yet another election-night disaster.

  1. I love this! One because it is nuts! It has been a topic on Maddow, Hardball, and Olbermann for few nights. I just wonder why this is getting more air time than say those memos release by the DOJ? You know the ones where the U.S. almost becomes a military state where people can be "disappeared." Very Chili in the 1980s.

At least we know who the ticket will be in 2012, Papa Bear "she was asking for it" O'Reilly and The Boss.

  3. @ Kari,

Yeah, that story deserved more attention than I could give it this week and so I let it slide. But in part because I suspect that this will not be the last we hear of it. Destroying that sort of evidence is so totally over the line that more serious and capable people than we will be sure to at least pursue it.

... though, I guess, if everyone's saying that...

  4. Clearly, you should start arguing the other side. If everyone says that this is despicable then someone should defend them. J.N. likes to read their blogs so I nominate him.

  6. Oh, yeah, I just meant that people seem to be talking a lot about this, but little substantive action has taken place yet. Calling for an investigation may be all that can be done, though, as the charges would most likely be criminal rather than civil.

This could be pretty promising, though I don't know how it turned out. Also, the ACLU is right to say we need more than a "Truth [and reconciliation] Committee. Fuck "reconciliation:" these people committed war crimes, they should be fucking prosecuted.
