The Daily Show Does Real America

In general, I agree with Phil that the Daily show's offensiveness often outweighs its truth-telling ability, especially when compared with the Colbert Report. This clip doesn't disabuse me of that impression, but/and it does put a funnier face on what I'm talking about here, here, and here.

EDIT: Hulu seems to be down. Here's the Daily Show's version:

EDIT II: Jed L. is calling this the best daily show ever on the frontpage of Daily Kos. For whatever that's worth.

    Oh, yeah... good point.

What's with 3/4 of the candidates this election being from, in some sense, not the lower 48? (Obama = Hawaii, Palin = Alaska, McCain = Panama). It's particularly odd, given the accusations of antiamericanism flying around.

  3. And no day symbolized that more than 9/11... The pause after that just killed me, and it might be the closest we've seen to Jason Jones breaking character.

  4. yeah, that made no sense. it reminded me a lot of that scene from Fahrenheit 9/11 when Moore was going through small towns in the midwest and people were telling him they were afraid because terrorists might attack their "city" next. Like terrorist were plotting "ok, first we attack New York, THEN Bumfuck, Colorado"(nothing personal against the people of Bumfuck)

  5. Oh my god, I can't get over that interview. "And the deaths."

As the icing on the cake of that episode, Jon Stewart ends with the following: "I just read this statement that Sarah Palin had made about the 'pro-america' parts of the country, and I think I might've said in response to that, I think I might've said 'Fuck you.' And that's just my way of saying I think that's a profanity to say, and I answered with a profanity. But that's not really fair, and it makes it seem like I'm just addressing Governor Palin about this, and I'm not, it's really this whole entire theme that there's more american areas or that some people love the country and some people don't. So I guess what I meant to say was, 'Fuck all y'all."

Now, again, the Daily Show's attitude of alienation can get out of hand sometimes. But seriously, c'mon, 9/11 did not affect small towns more than it affected New York (or DC for that matter). Come the fuck on. Saying that really does merit a "fuck you."

Also, Wasilla: christ, what is with your mayors?
