David Dayen summed up my thoughts pretty well:
Other than the fact that this deficit speech was given at all, I don't have a huge problem with itNo talk about the need to slash Medicare or Social Security, and a good first effort at slamming the Ryan budget.
The only thing that bothered me was the fact that Obama used this time and exposure to focus on the deficit rather than far more important, real problems we face. We'll see how much keeps to his guns when the actual budget negoations take place, but considering the horrible, mind blowingly stupid ideas that were being considered, this isn't too bad at all.

Honestly my first and most persistent opinion was that his mic needed more reverb. My second was that I liked him laying down a nice reminder as to why we have a government and what the government does for us when it's not busy killing people with robots on the other side of the planet.

ReplyDeleteObama is an amazing speaker, but I'm not sold yet. I want to see how he's going to defend Medicare from Rand Paul. Actually, I want to see how he's going to protect everything from Paul.
ReplyDeleteI liked that he emphasized WHY we have "entitlement" programs. It shifts the debate from "we can do without this wasteful spending" to "here is what it costs for our country to have these wonderful things."
