Since I am on a tight budget, my choices for upgrading were limited to the Sigman and the Tamron 70-200 2.8 lenses. In the end, it was the Tamron that came home with me as its performance, coupled with the outstanding price, proved to be too much for the competitors to beat. There were of course a few Canon and Nikkor lenses on display at the shop as well, but I do not know who has the cash these days to afford the extravagant prices that they demand. With the performance I have been getting from the Tamron, I am glad that I didn’t go for something more expensive as it is perfectly suited for my needs and I honestly can’t see much room for improvement. It seems that Canon has made an update on their Canon 180mm Macro lens. The first lens has a terribly slow autofocus. While the build quality and the image quality are both nice, the slow autofocus were a turn off for many users. Thankfully, they did an update somewhere in 2009 and the newer version of this lens is much better compared to the old one. The newer version of this lens still has the excellent and solid build quality. The only addition that Canon makes is the faster autofocusing mechanism. When you use the focus limiter and set it at 1.5 meter to infinity, this lens will focus blazingly fast. In fact, it is even comparable to my other Canon L lenses. When you use the full range of autofocus, it is considerably slower, but still faster than the original version. Canon really made a good move by upgrading this lens.
