Active speakers are speakers that have amplifiers built into them. Unlike unpowered, or traditional speakers, active speakers do not need a separate amplifier to drive their speaker cones. Speakers require electric power to drive their speaker cones. These cones are used to reproduce the sounds carried in the audio signal cable. For example, a microphone that is connected to an amplifier drives the speaker cones to reproduce the voice of whoever is speaking through the microphone. The power required to do this is supplied by the amplifier. This amplifier converts electrical energy into acoustic energy, which is dispersed through the environment. A loud enough amplifier can spread acoustic energy to an entire auditorium of people. Powered speakers are particularly useful in that they do not require additional components to work. An active speaker is simply plugged in and then it is ready to go, providing accurate audio reproduction with ease.
